Maravot's Synoptic Matrix

A comparison of the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke
plus the Gospel of John laid beside them

(Previously published in 1993 as part of our Buckley Series  under the title of
"Of Epicureans, Stoics & other ways to find Good")

The order of the matrix emphasizes differences among the gospels and refers to identical verses merely by the notation of chapter and verse. Where you see a chapter and verse cited without the saying, etc., assume that it is identical to the verse in the left hand column which is mostly Matthew's Gospel.

The Matrix shows how Matthew embellished, as it were, Mark's gospel and Luke followed Matthew and Mark, noting differences in chronology and also correcting Matthew. In Matthew the man with the withered arm, for instance, Luke shows is a man whose right arm is withered. So Luke elaborates where he thought appropriate. I have high-lighted texts which Matthew should have been following in Mark but did not pick up from Mark; likewise do we see details in Luke which he omits though presumably following Matthew and Mark.

In the matrix we also see how Luke remembers two beatitude scenes as to Matthew's remembrance of the Sermon on the Mount (but we see also in Matthew a reminder by Jesus how he had fed the 5,000 and then the 4,000 with fishes and loaves).

Son of Man shall come in the glory of

His Father , with the angels &

reward every man according to his

works

Some of you here shall not taste death

'till they see the Son of Man coming

in his kingdom

After six days Jesus taketh Peter,

James & John his brother up into

a high mountain

Transfigured-face as sun; raiment

white as snow

Moses & Elias talked with him

Peter asked, Let us build 3 tabernacles-

one to you, one to Elias & one to

Moses

Bright cloud overshadowed them, said:

This is my beloved Son in whom I am

well pleased; hear ye him.

Disciples afraid

Saw no man save Jesus

Tell no man 'till the Son of Man is

risen from the dead

Asked: Must Elias first come?

Elias truly shall first come & restore

all things

Elias is come already & suffered;

likewise shall the Son of

Man suffer

Then the disciples understood he was

talking of John the Baptist

Came to the multitude; cured child of

a devil who falls in fire & water

complained that Jesus' disciples

had failed to heal him

O Faithless generation, How long

shall I be with you?

Asked:Why could we not cast him out?

"Because of your unbelief; ye must

have faith as a grain of mustard seed

...say mountain remove thyself

and it shall be moved

Howbeit this kind goeth out by

fasting?

(while still in Galilee) he says Son of

Man shall be betrayed & killed &

raised again on the 3rd day..and they

were exceeding sorry

Went to Capernaum and into [Peter's]

house

Question over tribute money-Peter

told to catch fish which would have a

coin in it; told to give it to the

tribune

At the same time the disciples asked

who is greatest in the Kingdom of

Heaven

Jesus called a little child over to him

and spoke in parables

except ye become as little children

ye shall not see the kingdom..

But whoso shall offend one of these

little ones which believe in me

it were better for him that a

millstone were hanged about his

neck and that he were drowned

in the depth of the sea

Woe unto the world because of

offences!...But woe to that man by

whom offences come!

If your hand or foot offend you cut

it off

If your eye offend you pluck it out

Son of Man came to save the Lost

Parable of the 99 sheep

If thy brother trespass against thee

Whatsoever ye bind on earth shall

be bound in heaven

If two of you agree it shall be done

in heaven

Where two or three are gathered

in my name there am I

Peter Answered, How often must I

forgive my brother-'till 7 times?

Answer: seventy times seven

Parable of Kingdom-like a man

who forgave his servant his ten

thousand talent debt.

Then went to coasts of Judea

Healed multitudes

Pharisees came to him: is it lawful

to put away your wife?

Parable: God made man & woman

male and female that they twain

shall be one flesh

They asked, Why did Moses then

command to give a writing of

divorcement?

Jesus answered: Because of the hard-

ness of your hearts Moses suffered..

comment on adultery

comment on eunuchs (of priests)

Then were bought little children

Disciples rebuked; such is the

Kingdom of God

Good Master" one asked, "What must

I do to have eternal life?

Why callest me good?

Thou knowest the commandments

Love thy neighbor as thyself, etc.

Young man answered, I have kept

these things from my youth

If thou be perfect, give what thou

hast to thepoor & follow me.

Young man sorrowful because he

had great possessions

Easier for a camel to go through an

eye of a needle

Peter said; We have forsaken all and

followed thee

Ye shall sit on 12 thrones judging

the 12 tribes of Israel

Ye shall receive one hundred fold

But many that are first shall be last

and many which are last shall be first

Parable of Kingdom: like a house-

holder who hired laborers-to

explain why the last come first, etc.

9.28 About 8 days later

He, Peter, John & James went up into a mountain to pray

9.29 Countenance altered& his raiment was whiteand glistering

9.31 ibid, who appeared in glory & spoke of his decease which he should

accomplish in Jerusalem

9.33

9.34 There came a cloud

...This is my beloved Son.

Hear him.

9.37 On the next day much

7.6 If ye had faith as a grain of mustard, ye might say to this Sycamine tree remove thyself

9.44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of Man shall be delivered into the hands of men..and they understood him not

(does not mention they

went to [Peter's] house)

9.46 Then arose a reasoning among them which of them would be

greatest

9.47 Jesus, perceiving the thought of their hearts took a child

9.48 for he that is least among you the same shall be the greatest

9.48 Whosoever shall receive this child in my

9.49 We forbade one from casting out devils in your

rebuke him

7.4 If he trespass 7 times

in a day & 7 times repents,

forgive him.

9.51 And it came to pass that he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.

9.52 and sent his messengers before his face and they went into villages of Samaria to make ready for him

9.53 and they did not receive him.

10.25 A lawyer stood up,saying, "Master, what must I do to get eternal life?

18.18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good

master, what should I do to

inherit eternal life?

18.19

18.20

18.21 "All these have I kept from my youth up" [said the ruler]

18.22 Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hst and..follow me

18.23 When he heard this he was very sorrowful because he was very rich.

18.25

18.28

22.29 and I appoint you a kingdom as my Father hath appointed me.

22.30 That ye may eat & drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes [said at the Last Supper]

17.11 And it came to pass

as they went up to

Jerusalem, that he passed

through the midst of

Samaria & Galilee

17.12 entered certain village & met 10 lepers who said, "master have mercy on us"

17.14 Said, Go show yourselves to priests; then they were healed

17.16 One, a Samaritan, was asked, Where are the nine [other lepers I healed]?

17.20 Pharisees asked when the Kingdom of God would come

17.21 Kingdom is within you

17.22 The days shall come when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man

17.23 If some say, see here or see there, go not to them

17.24 For as the lightening shineth from one part of heaven tot he other so shall the Son of Man be in his day

17.25 But first he must suffer many things & be rejected of this generation.

9.16 Others said, How can a

man that is a sinner do such

miracles?

And there was a division

among them.

9.32 Since the world began

was it not heard that any

man opened the eyes of one

that was born blind.

9.35 Jesus heard that they

had cast him (the blind man)

out; and when he had found

him, he said unto him, Doest

thou believe on the Son of

God?

10.11 I am the good

shepherd; the good shepherd

giveth his life for the sheep.

10.16 And other sheep I

have which are not of this

fold: them also I must bring

and they shall hear my voice

and there shall be one fold,

and one shepherd.

10.19 There was a division

therefore again among the

Jews for these sayings.

10.20 And many of them

said, He hath a devil, and is

mad; why hear ye him?

10.22 And it was at

Jerusalem, the feast of the

dedication, and it was winter

And Jesus walked in the

temple in Solomon's Porch

10.23 Then came the Jews round about him; How long dost thou make us doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.

10.30 I and my Father are one.

10.31 Then the Jews took upstones again to stone him.

10.32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father;for which of those works do ye stone me?

10.33 The Jews answered him, saying, For good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy; and because thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

10.36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou Blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God.

10.37 If I do not the works

of my Father, beleive me

not.

10.40 and went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode two days (see 11.6)

(Then went to Bethany to visit Mary and her sister Martha--see Luke 10.38)

10.38 ..and raised Lazarus from the dead; then left Jerusalem and went into Ephraim; but the [third of his ministry] passover was nigh at hand and his disciples returned to Jerusalem. At the temple, they asked among themsleves whether Jesus would come to Jerusalem, since it would be dangerous for him to do so (11.56); now (11.57) both the chief priests & the Pharisees had given an order that if any man knew where Jesus were he should show it, that they might take him. (12.1) It was a little more than six days before the Passover. Jesus returned again to Bethany to visit Mary & Lazarus, etc. where Mary anointed Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair (12.3).

11.1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary & her sister Martha.

11.2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

11.14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

11.16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him (referring to Jesus who had before prophesied his death).

11.17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

11.43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus come forth.

11.44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes; and his face was bound with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

11.47 Then gathered the

chief priests and the

Pharisees a council, and

said, What do we? for this

man doeth many miracles?

11.48 If we let him thus

alone, all men will believe

on him: and the Romans

shall come and take away

both our place and nation

11.49 And one of them,

named Caiaphas, being the

high priest that same year,

said unto them, ye know

nothing at all.

11.51 And this spake he not

of himself: but being high

priest that year he

prophesied that Jesus should

die for that nation;

11.52 And not for that nation

only, but that also he should

gather together in one the

Children of God that were

scattered abroad.

11.53 Then from that day

forth they took counsel

together for to put him to

death.

7.33 Then said Jesus unto them, yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

7.34 ye shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

12.1 Six days before Passover Jesus visits Mary's house and is anointed by her as his feet were wiped by her hair. Was after Lazarus was raised. The people, knowing he was there, came to visit him, as he was famous for having raised Lazarus from the dead. The next day (5 days before the Passover) the people laid palm branches before Jesus as he went forth to meet him. (12.13)
